Intergenerational Trauma

“We grieve not just for the loss of a loved one, but for the loss of connection, culture, and history. Healing comes through reclaiming our stories and traditions.” ~ Unknown

What is Intergenerational Trauma?
Intergenerational trauma, also known as transgenerational or multigenerational trauma, refers to the transmission of trauma from one generation to the next. These traumas can stem from historical events such as wars, genocides, slavery, racism, and other forms of collective violence and oppression. They can also arise from familial trauma like abuse, neglect, and unresolved grief. This can occur through biological, psychological, and social pathways, and it often involves unconscious processes that perpetuate the effects of trauma over time.

Effects of Intergenerational Trauma
Emotional and Psychological Impact: High prevalence of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance abuse.
Physical Health Issues: Increased rates of chronic diseases, such as hypertension, obesity, asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.
Cultural Disconnection: Loss of language, traditions, cultural practices, and purpose.
Social and Economic Disparities: Higher rates of poverty, unemployment, and lower educational attainment.

Our Approach

Healing Intergenerational Trauma focuses on understanding and addressing the unique psychological experiences and needs of people from a cultural and ancestral lens. We explore the unconscious aspects of the human psyche which helps us understand how unprocessed trauma is passed down through generations, influencing not only individual behaviors and emotions but also familial and cultural patterns.

Uncovering the Unconscious Roots
We utilize techniques grounded in depth, indigenous, and contemplative psychology, to explore the unconscious roots of intergenerational trauma. By accessing the deeper layers of the psyche, we can uncover hidden traumas and their manifestations in current life experiences.

Exploring Family and Cultural Narratives
Understanding the narratives and myths that shape our familial and cultural identities is crucial in addressing intergenerational trauma. We help individuals explore these stories to gain insight into the origins and impacts of their inherited trauma.

Healing and Integration

Healing intergenerational trauma involves acknowledging and integrating these inherited wounds. Through therapeutic processes such as dream analysis, archetypal exploration, active imagination, and shadow work, we support individuals in confronting and transforming their trauma, leading to personal and social healing.
